I don't know if you saw the topic I posted a couple of nights ago, but when I saw your screen name that night I thought...... Gary Husband!! oh yeah!! The Tazmanian devil that once told me he was basically self taught at a Holdsworth gig. Man!!!....... If it wasn't for guys like you, my pop pocket would be nill, and would have continued with the thought that all was hopeless with my lame, basically self taught style was going to get me nowhere. Spent many a days internalizing all those Level 42 grooves. And I still think to this day, the I.O.U. recording is still some of the most inspirational fusion that has ever come down the pike. It breathed...., it had it's quiet moments like rainy evenings, and then crashed like thunder and lightning. Those were good days of my teens. When everything seemed wonderous and all the new experimental Jazz/Rock/Fusion was incredibly inspiring. Thanks Gary for your massive contribution to drumming as we know it today.

And thanks Steve for posting a rare find!!! I love the thunder of Garys drumming and the almost "machine gun" sounds of him killing the heads!!

IOU album actually Allan may be getting ready to remix - including too a selection of tracks that didn't make the original. The defitive version of "Water On the brain" was recorded for that record and was a great take. As it turns out we've found there are two versions - one with Paul Williams singing and one with Allan singing. They are seperate takes too ... as we originally made versions of that piece and, I think, "White Line", and they both went mysteriously missing. They've all been found now though, and it'd be great if all these came out. Allan has the multitracks, and these are all really good takes. It was an inspired time for us. For sure.

Hi Gary,

One of the first times I heard you play was the IOU record and I couldn't believe the power...there were some flams you played that sounded like the high tom was going to collapse.

There aren't many that I've heard that combine the creativity and power into a cohesive concept. Tony for sure, but he wasn't as "modern" as you were.

Thanks for all the great playing and hard work and for letting me (probably us all) cop some of your fills! (esp. the one in Dodgy Boat from wardenclyffe, I have used it live before) [img]wink.gif[/img]

Tradfreak, yes I've worked alongside Jimmy Johnson very many times during my tenure with Allan Holdsworth. He's fantastic - one of the best there is around. As far as I know there's not too much about him on the net. Shame.

Saw you with Holdsworth at B.B. King's club in N.Y. a few years back and also a long time ago in Madison Wi in a small Venue. Steve Hunt was on that particular gig with Jimmy Johnson as well.

All I can say is....


Thank You for giving, giving, and creating the most intense music in my lifetime. I really haven't heard anyone play like that live.

You have created your own music which is so amazing.

Scholars are going to be studying Holdsworth's music much like Bach's and Dvorak's. I'm convinced of that ! Your drumming fits his music to the nth degree.

Dear Blake1, FuseU2, Roy Cameron, Clintuplet, Benrand for these further really nice postings. Makes me happy you guys have enjoyed what I've been doing. It's inspiring too, so thanks!

Benrand. The IOU thing. Well ... this was 1980, and, (because of pressure from the guitarist in the group!) I was playing my beloved old 1970's Gretsch walnut finish set with black spot C.S. heads. The 'Tony' combination! As you noticed I always, (and still) like to crank that smallest rack tom to it's limits! Maybe it's a Stew Copeland thing - I really always pursued that 'crack'. I used to call it the tennis racket sound, like when they manage to get one of those full, central hits right in the middle of the racket and it kinda pops!! Good analogy!

Blake1, thanks man! The 2000 tour, yes. We had good times there. I did always enjoy the tension and intensity in terms of drums. I guess it's the way I just feel them. In these days I do like to try and have it all work in the same way but with better pocket in a general sense. That's one of my definite goals. It's difficult, as musically, I love the "waves" thing - the tension and release of things, but it drives me mad kinda if the time suffers. In this way it's a hard thing to balance. Allan's music should definitely 'breath' and be bendy, sort of ... but do you see what the click track has done to us!!!!!!?????

These days i like the challenge of achieving that flow and that taking off on tangents with a click track. In Allan's music we actually tried it on 'Warderncliff Tower' as Al recorded all the guitar up front and made sequences out of the pieces. That was the first album he used this approach. I must say it felt really different, and sometimes slightly uncomfortable while actually playing, but on playback I enjoyed it more. Interesting huh?

Good time and good pocket is something not immeditaly within my grasp. I started (and continue) to work hard on this. Ideally I guess I'd like the accuracy and control of a Simon Phillips, or a Vinnie, but with all the spontaineous, intense and crazy stuff I feel so much and like to bring in. It's not 'obviously' achievable because ... crazy is crazy! Hmmm.

Let's put it this way. It wasn't probably a concern of Keith Moon's!

Anyway ... just rambling here guys!

Another posting asked about my old video, and whether it will come out on DVD. Let's say, I don't think so. I am unable to get through to anyone who produces that anymore, and, I don't think it was much of a seller at all ... not according to the figures I've seen anyway. The approving of it was taken out of my hands at the time, and this was a big problem for me. There was a lot of good stuff that didn't make it, a lot of duff stuff that DID make it, and of course, non of the informative stuff I had planned for it they refused to let me do too. In the end it was all a little bitter, as I didn't read the small print. When it hurts you learn fast!!! Love to do a better one - a new one. It's difficult as I'm not really up there with the big names, and Hudson (or whoever) aren't exactly falling over themselves to have me do one! i actually feel now, though, i could do a really good one. Maybe RSJ groove (who will put out my Force Majeure DVD) would be the best bet, but he's a small company and is already having to sell his car to complete this one we're already getting ready for release!!

When it's worth that much though, it will get done. Somehow!

Anyway guys, thank you very much again. It's great to know people have been listening, and continue to!

I just want to thank you for spending time with us, here and at Billy's. I have always loved your fluidity. Like Blake and the others know and all so well, the stuff that you did with Alan was just over the top!

It was Alan who answered the door at Tony's place in NYC, the day I had my first lesson with him. I know how you feel about Tony and well, there are some here that echo that sentiment.

Incidentally, that duet you did with Billy is one of my favorites!

Recently, I heard some audio of you and a guitar player in the UK that was very exciting, where you did Proto-Cosmos. Tony would very proud!

You are one of the great players and I am so fortunate to be able to read your candid thoughts on these public forums. You are really an incredible guy and an inspiration!

Gary, its great that you and a few others of your stature post to this board. I saw you last year at The Regent in Arlington with Gongzilla and it was one of the best shows I ever saw. The musicianship of you and the band was at a high level that one rarely gets to witness. I'm really looking forward to the release of the DVD of that concert. My brother Jim from the Regent wanted me to send his regards also and I know that He's pretty happy that He is on the trailer for the DVD.
